We were pleased to welcome a lot of abroad researchers and academic workers, who in the discussion provided the presenting Ph.D. students with valuable feedback and recommendations for improving their research. This year’s conference also hosted 2 keynotes, namely Analyzing the human-machine interface – Theories and research methods for understanding successful development and implementation of technology by Caroline Dotter from the Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Regensburg and How to increase consumer satisfaction by using the design thinking method? by Agnieszka Piekar from Wroclaw University of Economics and Business. Other guests of honor included Amitabh Anand from Excelia Business School, Dóra Horváth from Corvinus University of Budapest and Marek Kosny from Wroclaw University of Economics and Business, who together with Tomas Kincl, Lenka Komárkova and Mojmir Sabolovic from the Faculty of Management, Prague University of Economics and Business were members of the programme committee, which evaluated individual performances.
The committee evaluated the individual contributions and chose the three best presenters. Their evaluation reflected a comprehensive concept of research, presentation skills and also the level of their scientific posters. The three awards this year (alphabetically) are:
The FMSCICOM conference is held regularly in the autumn and serves as a platform for doctoral students to so-called “try the conference firsthand”. A mandatory part for its active participants is the submission of a conference paper, whereby the so-called junior doctoral students (i.e. those who are in the 1st or 2nd year of their doctoral studies) submit their research proposal, senior doctoral students (i.e. those who have been studying for 3 years or more) submit an extended abstract with its usual sections. This year brought an innovation in the form of scientific posters, i.e. large-format posters, on which participants briefly summarize their research in a graphically clear form.
The conference is completely free for all participants and is financed from the funds of the Internal Grant Competition of the Prague University of Economics and Business.
]]>The conference is open to Ph.D. and Master’s students from all universities, who are invited to submit their research (fragments of their doctoral or masters thesis) in the form of extended abstracts of their papers (published or in preparation) or proposals and posters under the scope of economics, management, and other relevant disciplines. The 15 – 20 minute public presentation takes place in front of the programme committee and is followed by a brief discussion on the topic and research itself.
The conference is organized as a two-track event. The first track is for Junior researchers (Master’s and junior Ph.D. students) who present their research proposal, the second track is for Senior researchers (senior Ph.D. students or students who have participated in this conference before) who present their work-in-progress.
The conference participation is free of charge for all participants. Accompanying persons and listeners are also welcome, and registration is necessary too.
Research Proposal and Extended Abstract submission deadline is August 31st, 2023. For more information, please contact Aneta Lejčková.

After +18 months of international collaboration between Warsaw School of Economics, Prague University of Economics and Business, National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA) and University of Debrecen we are pleased to announce publishing the REPORT ON GOOD PRACTICES IN FINANCING HEALTHCARE SERVICES IN OPHTHALMOLOGY including infographics for Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Ukraine. The team of Prague University of Economics & Business covered Czech Republic and Slovakia in the project.
Overall, our findings suggest various areas where the cataract, glaucoma, vitrectomy, AMD, DME, and corneal transplant treatments in Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovakia can be improved, such as financing options, quality control systems, reimbursement revisions, early detection measures, and utilization of advanced technologies.
Ukraine can learn from the Visegrad countries’ experiences, especially in areas such as financing mechanisms, coverage of treatments, diagnostic screenings, and improving the quality and accessibility of ophthalmic surgeries. Implementation of these practices would require careful consideration of Ukraine’s specific healthcare system and legal framework.
We would also like to thank the Visegrad Fund for funding this research, as well as all the institutions and their representatives who participated in the interviews, shared their insights, and support the information-based health policymaking.
Summary Report on Good Practices in Financing Healthcare Services in Ophthalmology including infographics available in English and local language by country can be found on the project’s homepage.
Team of Prague University of Economics & Business:
In the very first days of the armed conflict, tendencies began to emerge on how to get involved in international aid and how to use the know-how of the faculty. Already in the first half of March 2022, a Community Centre was established at the faculty, whose primary goal was to coordinate local assistance to refugees heading from the affected areas to Jindřichův Hradec. In cooperation with the Town of Jindřichův Hradec and other local organisations, it was thus possible to offer aid in the form of public collections as well as procedural aid in a very flexible manner. Material collections and obtaining basic information from official places and authorities towards refugees, connecting refugees with local hosts, language and translation assistance for authorities and other organizations.
A lot of these activities were actively supported by students of the Faculty of Management who come from places affected by the armed conflict. With their help, it was possible to quickly prepare language courses on the Czech language basics, which helped the refugees with a smooth adaptation to the life in the Czech Republic. Czech language lessons still continue to take place at the faculty, regularly several times a week, at various levels of difficulty, from lessons for children to language lessons for advanced students. Several dozen interested parties regularly participate in these courses.
The conflict in Ukraine has also affected students of Ukrainian universities who, with refugee status, were looking for a way to get to safety and not interrupt their university studies. Approximately 40 students expressed their interest in studying at the Faculty of Management after the conflict began during the spring of 2022. Thirteen students were physically involved as freemovers in the spring of 2023 and begun to study English courses and intensive Czech-language classes. At the same time, the offices designated for visiting professors were modified, which promptly became accommodation for the newly admitted students from Ukraine. The rooms were equipped partly from the resources of the faculty and partly through a public material collection that was held at the faculty. In the academic year 2022/2023, 5 of the original 13 students became full-time students of the Czech management study programme after successfully meeting the admission requirements.
The faculty has not forgotten and does not forget its current students. Already in the first days of the conflict, they were assured during informal meetings with the faculty management that there was no need to worry about anything. The staff and students of the Faculty of Management treat everyone equally, do not condemn anyone on the basis of nationality, race or gender and do not recognise collective guilt. A number of students who have lost financial support from home as a result of the conflict have been offered assistance in the form of exceptional scholarships to bridge their difficult economic situation.
During 2022, a new student organization has emerged. Organization In.League aims to connect students across nationalities, linking Czech, Slovak and other international students into a common student life. The students of this association began to involve all foreign students in the activities of other faculty associations, started to offer informal psychological support and also organized charity events. On 22 February 2023, they organized a commemorative act in front of the building on the anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine, where they thanked all those who were trying to help.
What have we prepared for you? We will introduce you to the world of doctoral studies and show you that it is not a useless thing and that it is definitely suitable even for job positions in the top management of national or multinational companies. In the world, the letters Ph.D. have a lot of weight. You will also learn that doctoral studies are one of the ways to build a career in the academic or research world.
If you don’t run away from challenges, if you seriously consider your future, join us and give us a chance to show you the options. Through the world of PhD studies will guide you the vice-dean for science, research and doctoral studies, associate professor Tomas Kincl and the vice-dean for external relations, associate professor Mojmir Sabolovic. The meeting is NOT limited to FM VŠE students; anyone, who is interested, may join and participate.
]]>Apart from the PhD students, the conference welcomed guests from abroad. Isabell Koinig from Alpen-Adria-Universitat Klagenfurt, Department of Media and Communications in Austria lead a keynote on Survey Design – (between) qualitative and quantitative research, Dora Horvath from Corvinus University of Budapest, Corvinus Business School in Hungary hosted with a keynote on Creating Scientific Research as Designing. Research Opportunities of Transdisciplinarity via Design Communication. There was also an expert workshop Conceptualization, Operalisation and Measurement, which was led by Žaneta Gravelines from Kaunas University of Technology, School of Economics and Business in Lithuania.
The FMSCICOM 2022 conference served primarily as a lively forum for providing feedback to PhD students. They presented the outputs of their research and scientific approaches not only in front of the expert committee, but especially in front of all visitors. All of them can give the students their insights and valuable comments. The members of the committee this year were Lenka Komárková, Agnieszka Bem from Wroclaw University of Economics and Business in Poland, Mojmír Sabolovič and Tomáš Kincl.
Every year, the conference also includes an evaluation of the papers and presentations of individual PhD students who participate in the conference. This year, all presenting students were evaluated comprehensively and the traditional choice of the three best ones was changed. The awards this year went to Petr Šimáček for the potential of his research, Lucie Klattová for the scientific merit and Zdena Hrušková for the overall highest level of oral presentation.
The conference ended with an informal social evening during which the students had the opportunity to network with all the guests and discuss their research issues.
